Overview

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance is designed for learners who are employed within the construction industry. This qualification is achieved in a real workplace environment, allowing you to develop, demonstrate, and validate your skills, knowledge, and competence as a Plant Mechanic.

Assessment and Support

You will be assessed against a set of performance and knowledge statements derived from National Occupational Standards (NOS) for your occupational area. A qualified and experienced assessor will guide and support you throughout the qualification process, ensuring you meet the required standards.

This qualification focuses on practical skills and underpinning knowledge, helping you gain fundamental, transferable competencies essential for a career in plant or machinery maintenance. It can also be undertaken as part of an apprenticeship framework within the Construction Apprenticeship Framework in England and Wales

This qualification is supported by the Construction Plant Association (CPA).

Mandatory Units

As part of the qualification, you will gain essential practical skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety, and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
  • Moving, Handling, and Storing Resources in the Workplace
  • Operating Plant or Machinery for Non-Operational Activities in the Workplace
  • Servicing Plant or Machinery in the Workplace
  • Removing and Replacing Plant or Machinery Components to Replace Worn, Damaged, or Faulty Parts in the Workplace
  • Dismantling and Assembling Plant or Machinery Components to Replace Worn, Damaged, or Faulty Parts in the Workplace
  • Diagnosing Faults in Plant or Machinery Systems or Components in the Workplace
  • Inspecting Plant or Machinery for Operational Serviceability in the Workplace

Optional Units

In addition to the mandatory units, learners will choose two of the following optional units:

  • Installing, Repairing, or Modifying Construction Resources by Heating, Welding, Brazing, Soldering, and Thermal Cutting in the Workplace
  • Producing One-off Components to Restore or Maintain the Operational Functions of Plant or Machinery in the Workplace
  • Installing Plant or Machinery for Operational Activities in the Workplace
  • Configuring Plant or Machinery for Specific Operational Activities in the Workplace
  • Handing Over Plant or Machinery to the Control of Others in the Workplace
  • Carrying Out Specific Tests on Plant or Machinery to Determine Operational Serviceability in the Workplace

This qualification equips you with the technical expertise and hands-on experience required to excel as a Plant Mechanic within the construction industry.

Qualification Structure

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance (Construction) requires learners to complete a combination of mandatory and optional units to achieve certification.

Qualification Details:

  • Qualification Title: Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance (Construction)
  • Minimum Credit Value: 192
  • Total Qualification Time (TQT): 1920 hours
    • TQT represents the estimated total time required to complete the qualification, including guided learning hours (GLH) and self-directed study (such as independent learning, research, and preparation).
  • Minimum Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 641 hours
    • GLH covers time spent under the direct supervision of a lecturer, supervisor, or tutor, including assessments conducted under supervision.

Qualification Requirements

To be awarded this qualification, learners must achieve a minimum of 192 credits, which includes:

  • 9 mandatory units (core competencies)
  • 2 optional units from the designated selection
