CSCS CARD TYPES

CSCS Red Card - Trainee

The Trainee card is available to those registered for a competence-assessed qualification and those who have achieved a non-competence assessed training qualification.

Five-year Trainee card (non-renewable)

A five-year Trainee card is for those registered for, and working towards, a competence-assessed qualification such as an NVQ/SVQ or an academic qualification such as a HNC, HND or Degree.

The qualification may be vocational or academic, but it must be acceptable for a skilled CSCS card. Holders of the five-year card are expected to complete their qualification by the time it expires.

Two-year Trainee card (renewable)

Individuals who have attained an approved Level 2 (or above) occupation related non-competence qualification within the last five years are eligible for an initial two-year card. Upon the card’s expiration, the holder can gain a new three-year Trainee card by providing evidence they are registered onto an N/SVQ or an agreed alternative.

CITB Health, Safety and Environment test

All Trainee card applicants must have passed the Operative level CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last two years. Trainee card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification.

CSCS Green Card

A CSCS Green Card is designed for individuals working in labouring occupations within the construction industry, such as general laborers, cleaners, plumbers, carpenters and bricklayers. All applicants must pass the CITB health, safety and environment test for operatives and hold one of the following:

The Level 1 (Scotland Level 4) Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
The Scottish Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate
The NOCN/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738) unit
A CSCS approved alternative qualification

CSCS Blue Card

The CSCS Blue Card is designed specifically for skilled construction workers who have experience in services such as roofing, insulation, road-building, etc .
The Blue Skilled Worker card is valid for five years and for those who have achieved a construction related NVQ/SVQ level 2 or SVQ at SCQF level 5 or completed an apprenticeship, such as an Employer sponsored apprenticeship, a City and Guilds Craft Certificate (CGLI) or a CSCS-recognised Apprenticeship.

If you do not have these qualifications, but you are experienced in your job and have registered for a qualification applicable to your occupation, you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card.

All applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last two years, at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use our Card Finder.

CSCS Gold Card

The CSCS Gold Card is for experienced professionals. It’s an advanced-level card intended for Advanced Crafts and supervisors within the construction industry. This card is proof that the holder of this card has the capability to supervise personnel in a construction environment.
The CSCS Gold Skilled Worker card is available for those who have:

Achieved a Construction Related NVQ/SVQ level 3 or SVQ at SCQF level 6.
Completed an approved apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC, Institute of Apprenticeships etc.)
Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship that included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.
This card is valid for five years and all applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the last two years, at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for.

CSCS Black Card

The CSCS Black Card is for experienced professionals. It indicates that the holder of this card has the knowledge, skills, capability, and experience to manage high-level tasks in a construction environment. It’s given to individuals who have achieved an advanced level qualification in the field of construction and also have managerial experience.
The Manager card is available for managers and those in technical occupations subject to:

Achievement of a relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7
An SVQ at SCQF Level 10 or 11 in Construction Management/Technical related qualification

CSCS White Card

The CSCS White Card is the highest level among all the CSCS Card types. There are two types of white CSCS cards: one for the Academically Qualified Person and the other for the Professionally Qualified Person.
The Professionally Qualified Person card is for members of CSCS-approved professional bodies and is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test or the alternative CIC Health and Safety Test.

Applicants must supply proof that they hold current membership of the professional body at a level accepted by CSCS, by providing one of the following:

A membership certificate, showing membership for the current calendar year.
A membership card – both sides, confirming membership for the current calendar year.
An up-to-date letter or email from the professional body confirming membership for the current calendar year.
A receipt of payment for membership for the current calendar year.
A clearly dated screenshot showing your current membership from your professional body’s website.
Membership is required to be renewed annually and the above evidence must confirm membership for the current calendar year and the level of membership held. Failure to renew, or revocation of, a Professional Membership may result in a card being cancelled without notice.

This card cannot be renewed. On expiry, please apply for a new Professionally Qualified Person card. Applications to renew existing cards will be rejected.
